Mild Sweet Flavor
With a thinner skin and mild sweet flavor, Gala is one of America's favorite eating apples. It is typically a smaller apple that is red with yellow/green vertical stripes and is fairly resistant to bruising. Their size, mellow flavor, and thin skin make them a perfect choice for kids.
Best Uses
An excellent eating apple and salad apple. It is good for sauce and fair for pies.
History of the Cultivar
Gala was developed in New Zealand in the 1920's by an orchardist J.H. Kidd. It is a cross between Golden Delicious and Kidd's Orange Reds. It was first planted in commercial orchards during the 1980's.
